THE OMNOI STADIUM

Special report by Serge TREFEU (2010)

The stadium of Omnoi is a part four bigger stadium of the country. In Thailand we can classify in the important order at first the stadium of Lumpinee then the stadium of Radja and TV7 and finally the stadium of Omnoi.

In 1984 a group of businessman consisted of Mr. Manop Horpresertkit, Mr. Damrong Phutan and Mr. Phaibuun Kaennakhum goes up together an event connected to Muay Thai which will take place every live week on a TV channel.

The Show begins in the small stadium Samrong to Samutprakarn who is in the suburb remote from the capital. The matches are broadcasted live on the channel 9 and the broadcast receives an enormous success. Furthermore, it is the first time when a program of boxing is commented by a woman, Mrs Khnitha Phutan, a sister of Mr Damrong Phutan!

In 1987 the small stadium of Samrong becomes too small for the shows which are growing and the number of spectator who does not stop increasing. The construction of a bigger stadium which could compete with both celebrate stadium of Lumpinee and Radja is thus imperative.

But mythical stadium are implanted well in Bangkok and do not want to be competed. Another city than the capital must be found to avoid this competition. The city from Samut Sakhorn to 30 km from Bangkok is thus chosen to build the new stadium.

He is built in the district of Krathumbaem and his official name is called ” Siam Boxing Stadium ” but everybody calls him “Omnoi Stadium”…

His accommodation facilities are about 4000 persons and he is a little bit similar to the famous stadium TV7, builds as a studio to film live matches on a channel of television.

In 1990 the channel 9 prefers to centralize its sports program on the football rather than on the Muay Thai, it is the end of the live for the boxing in the stadium of Omnoi.

But in 1993 the agreements are crossed with the channel 3 to be able to continue the broadcasts of live Muay Thai. And today it is always on this channel that everything on live Saturdays from 11 am in the morning the fights are broadcast…

In spite of he is less important than Lumpinee or Radja, of great fight sometimes have places here. With meetings deserving of those organized in big two stadium.

Matches as Seanchai Sor Kingstar against Khem Sor Ploenchit, Anuwat Kaewsamrit against Puja Sor Suwanee, Nong B Kiatyongyuth against Attachai Fairtex and many others…

But the strong event of the stadium of Omnoi which takes place everything the years is the famous tournament ISUZU where most of the great champions of the country participated at least once in their career!

Today the foreign fighters often fight in the stadium of Omnoi which is more accessible than Lumpinee, Radja or that of the TV 7. It is not rare to see live on the channel 3 fights in the stadium of Omnoi only between farangs (foreigner). Moreover the price of places for the foreigners is crossed from 200 bahts to 600 bahts…

During big event, when the stadium is full in torn, the atmosphere is there also fantastic as in Lumpinee, in Radja or in TV7 stadium. And in spite of the stadium is taken away from the capital the punters do not hesitate to come en masse!

Among some great champions of Omnoi who marked the story of this stadium these last years little quoted Buakaw Por Parmuk, Anuwat Kaewsamrit, Yuthajak Kaewsamrit, Duwao Kongidorm, Samranchai 96 Peenang, Thanongdet Chengzimaygym, Pinsiam Sor Amnuaysirichok, Fart Ek Suwanpakdee, Sornpichai Sor Thongprapa, Jareanchai Jor Ratchadakorn, Rungphet Wor. Rungniran …
