THE KESA GYM

Special report by Serge TREFEU (2010)

Kesa Gym is opened since 7 years. It is Mr Poyon former big boxer who created this camp. Regrettably Mr Poyon died three years ago further to a cardiac problem. His small son Thiinung who has around thirty fights in stopped its boxer’s career to take back the camp. Today it is him who manages Kesa Gym…

The camp belongs to Nonthaburi, city in the North of Bangkok. He is in quiet soi (alley), in a district which is not very far from the House of famous Master Tattooist, Ajahn Keaw. Moreover some boxers of this camp wear the tattoos of Master…

The front door of the camp is half covered by branches of tree with magnificent pink flowers. On the placard in Thai, he is written “Kay Muay” (Camp of Thai Boxing) but it is difficult to know that a camp of boxing is here. Only the shouts of nakmuays let guess that a camp hides behind this nice gate.

The camp by him even is not big, a small boxing ring with three punch bags. But the place is vast with two big houses, a wide garage and an immense yard. Of what to welcome a lot of people. The family of the owner lives in the first house which is just in front of the boxing ring. The boxers stay in the second house which is at the bottom of the yard.

A dozen boxers to be in charge of by two trainers are permanently here. The trainers offer two styles of trainings because they come from two different schools. One comes from the North-East from Buriram and the other of the South from Surathani.

There are some good boxers in this small camp with Yodsaenchai Kesagym, Petpreawpreaw Kesagym, Deanladapum Kesagym and Keangchai kesagym. But both stars of the camp who trains here since 4 years are Big Ben Kesagym (Radja Champion, World champion WBC, Thailand Champion) and Jaroenchai Kesagym (Radja Champion, Omnoi Champion, Thailand Champion), the portraits of both champions are proudly explained above the boxing ring!

Big Ben is a “Taurus” which beat champions as Kharuhart Ekchumphon, Noppadeat Chuwattana, Saiyoknoi Pumpanmuang, and of big foreign champion as Skarbowsky (KO) and Mabel (KO)!

Jaroenchai Kesagym, strong boxer, beat too big champions and was elected best fighter in 2008!

The boxers of the camp fight all for one of the biggest promoters of the Radja, Chujarean Raveearamwong. They fight a lot in the stadium of Radja and sometimes little in the stadium of Lumpinee.

Here it is a Fimeuu (technician) camp but they work enormously the physical condition. The training is twice made a day. That of him after noon is particularly bruising because he begins early at 3 pm to end at 7 pm. The daily jogging is not very important with regard to the other camps, 10 km in the morning and six kilometres after noon. But on the other hand here the rounds are infernal, rounds of 10 minutes!

Every boxer makes three rounds of ten minutes for paos and follow by three rounds of ten minutes in punch bags. The skipping rope is long also, more than 30 minutes as well as the session of clinch which lasts 45 minutes!

It is really a work centred on the physical condition which nakmuays makes quite in the daytime of the week except Sunday. On Monday, on Wednesday and Friday, the training of after noon is dedicated for Boxing…

Little foreigner came to Kesa Gym, just a French and a Japanese stayed for a long time. But the camp accepts the foreigners, they can moreover sleep in rooms of the camp. The price is 3000 bahts for month, accommodation and food. It is necessary to count moreover, 200 bahts a day for the training.

The foreign boxers who wish to train in this camp have to have a physical condition staunch. Indeed because the training is very hard and meet sparring in front of rough Big Ben or Jareonchai can turn out very difficult if we are not ready physically…
