Serge TREFEU: Hello Ajahn Boonlay, how are you?

BOONLAY SOR THANIKUL: I’m well, thank you!

How old are you?

I’m 45 years old

You come of what region of the Thailand?

I was born in the region of Chachoengsao (Eastern Region from Thailand)

What is that you are married, do you have children?

Yes I’m married and I have five children

Your children practise Muay Thai?

Not still they are too young…

You have brothers and sisters?

A big sister and brother twins

Your brother was a boxer also?

Yes he was a great champion who was called Boonlung but he unfortunately died in a car accident…

You began the boxing at which age?

I began the boxing at the age of 10

You fought at once?

Yes for my first fight I won at points…

How you discovered the boxing?

My father was a big enthusiast of boxing, it’s him who formed us, me and my brother!

In what camp you began your training?

At the beginning we trained with my father then I went to the camp Sitmabon near my home

You fought a lot for this camp?

I have make approximately 50 fights for this camp…

In what age you were in Bangkok and in which camp?

I left to Bangkok to the age of 13 years and the first camp where I went was Sor Ploenchit, I stayed two years in Sor Ploenchit, my brother was with me too, then we went to the camp Sor Thanikul where I have make all my boxer’s career…

In what category you fought?

In 115 lbs, 118 lbs, 122 lbs, and 126 lbs!

What are the titles which you gained?

I gained my first belt of Lumpinee in 115 lbs against Langsuan Phayutaphum, then I gained the belt of Lumpinee in 122 lbs against Wangchannoi Sor Palangchai in 1992, I defended my title triumphantly against Oley Kiatoneway and I lost my belt against Chatchai Paiseethong!

How much have you make of fights?

I have make approximately 400 fights for 300 victories and 5 draws!

You took away many fights by KO?

Not too much, some victories only…

You had which style of boxing?

I was a technical fighter (Fimeu)

What was your technique preferred in fight?

All the techniques of Muay Thai, I liked as well the clinch as the fists or the feet!

What was your hardest fight?

Against Namkabuan, I think that it be one of my hardest fights, he was very technically. My fights against Somrak also were difficult!

So my fight against Silapathai was hard because he beat me by KO!

Your best memory of boxing?

It’s to have beaten Namkabuan because he was the best fighter of my category at that time, we are twice faced to us with a victory each!

What are the known Thai fighters that you faced?

There was a lot Langsuan, Wangchannoi, Somrak, Oley, Chatchai, Silapathai, Namkabuan, Jaroensap, Jongsanan, Karuhat, Lamnamoon, Superlek, Cherry, Thedkiet, Chamophet…

You have already fought abroad?

Yes, once in Hong-Kong, I gained my fight at points!

What is according to you the best foreign fighter today and in your time?

Today, I don’t know the foreign fighters, but before most hardly he was the Dutch Ramon Dekkers!

And the best Thai fighter now, it’s who according to you?

There is several, Buakaw, Saenchai, Superbank, Pakorn are very strong…

What was your promoter when you fought?

It was Songchai Ratanasuban

What was your purse in Thailand in the time?

My purses were 200 000 bahts!

Today you became a trainer?

Yes I’m a trainer to the camp Sor Korpilap since five years

Were is this camp?

To Soi 93 of Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok

It’s in the same district as your old camp Sor Thanikul?

Exact, the Sor Thanikul camp which closed is not far from Sor Korpilap

You have many fighters in your camp?

About ten, especially children…

The foreigners can come to train in your camp?

Yes of course, the price is 400 bahts for two trainings…

Boonlay ” The Deserving ” was an exceptional technician, one of the best of his generation, it belongs of legends of ” the age of Gold ” of the muay thai in Thailand!
