ERAWAN BOXING GYM

by Serge TREFEU (2020)

Erawan Boxing has been around for more than 20 years, it’s located in the Sateng district in the big city of Yala. Yala is a region in the very heart in the south of Thailand that touches the border of Malaysia. The majority of the inhabitants of this region are Muslim, many of whom are of Malaysian origin.

Although this region is very far from the capital, Muay Thai is well developed in Yala, as well as in the other two border regions of Malaysia, Pattani and Narathiwat. Big boxing events often take place in these regions, the famous Thai Fight show was held in Pattani in 2013, in Narathiwat in 2015 and in Yala in 2017. The great promoters of the Lumpinee stadium also regularly organize sumptuous events from Muay Thai to Yala.

THE THAI FIGHT SHOW ORGANIZED IN YALA WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Former great champions Saensakdaa Sittikacem (Lumpinee Champion), Sayfon Lukkabu (Radja Champion) and Supernoi Sitchokchai (Thailand Champion) come from Pattani and Yala.

In and around Yala City, there are many famous small gyms like Chor Siwichian and Ban Nikom Kulong Muay Thai Gym. Also, in the city of Yala, a huge complex dedicated to the practice of Muay Thai was created in the city’s main university, the Rattanapanu boxing camp. A gym owned by Mr. Pittaya Rattanapan. The star of the gym is Saifon Rattanapanu who won the prestigious Tiger Cement TV7 N° 16 tournament in 2016, Saifon is now training at the famous PK Saenchai Gym in Bangkok. Saifon of his real name Haseng Wahani was born and raised in Yala.

SAIFON RATTANAPANU

The Rattanapanu Gym was originally built primarily for young people in the southern border regions to help them escape the problems of drugs, and especially ethnic and political violence that are important in the region. For 40 years, the three Thai border regions of Malaysia have been claimed by several separatist movements, this conflict between the Thai military and the separatists has caused thousands of deaths, mostly civilians.

The most productive boxing gym in the Yala region is undoubtedly the Erawan Boxing Gym. Because this gym includes the largest number of champions in the entire region. In 2018, he received the trophy for “Best Boxing Gym in Southern Thailand”!
