KID BOXERS THAILAND

Special report

by Serge TREFEU (2020)

(Thanks to Mack Dimata, an enthusiast of kid’s fights in Thailand, for his info on the Boomdeksien Gym and the kid’s Dumpans)

The boxing practiced by children in Thailand is often a subject that is much ink to flow in the country of Muay Thai.

Opinion in Thailand is divided into two parts with those who think that a boxer must start the Muay Thai very early so that he can acquire solid basics. Because this sport is very hard physically and technically difficult to control. He must also build a strong mind from an early age to hope to become a champion. Also, the child has the opportunity to earn an income that can help his family, often from a modest background.

And those who do not accept that a child takes so much danger with this sport at such an early age. Above all, if the blows received have an effect on the child’s developing brain, blows that may negatively affect the young boxer in the long term. And can one day lead to a tragic event…

Several important Thai personalities, doctors, professors, politicians, wanted to strengthen and especially apply to the letter the «Law of 1999» on the sport of boxing (Official law of 1999 on the sport of boxing in Thailand which includes 63 articles, edited by His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej), following the death of the young boxer Petchmongkol Por Peenaphat who died on 10 November 2018 at 13 years after a boxing match.

Petchmongkol started boxing at the age of 8 and fought 174 fights in five years. Coming from a very modest family, raised by his grandmother and grandfather, he gave all the money from his fights to his grandparents. The biggest purse he ever got was 4,000 baht. Statistically, Petchmongkol fought, on average, 34 times a year. That’s about one fight every 11 days.

The rules of the “1999 Act” are clear, a fighter who completes 5 rounds must rest 21 days before the next fight. A boxer who wins 3 rounds must rest 14 days before the next fight. A boxer who loses by knocking or by a TKO technique must rest 30 days before the next fight. A boxer who loses by ko with two concussions must rest for 90 days and must be certified to fight again by a doctor. These obvious rules for the protection of the health of boxers are not always applied in Thailand.

In his last fight in Samut Prakan province, during the fight, after receiving a series of violent punches, Petchmongkol fell knockout. Unconscious, he had to be taken to hospital for first aid. Unfortunately, his brain suffered a fatal brain injury. His death affected many people in the boxing world in Thailand…

PETCHMONGKOL POR PEENAPHAT (RIP)

Section 29 of the Professional Boxing Act, 1999, stipulates that a registered boxer with a professional license must be at least 15 years old (between 12 and 15 years old). But in reality, there have always been, and more and more in recent years, thousands of boxers under the age of 12 fighting in Thailand. Some fight from the age of 4….

Child rights defenders in Thailand also want to ban professional boxing for children under the age of 15. For ethical reasons, they believe that this sport is child abuse and a game tool for adults who can exploit them financially. And cite articles of the “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child”, where it’s written that it’s forbidden to hire, coerce, induce, to encourage or enable children to take actions that may be harmful to their body and mind, to affect their growth, and to hinder children’s development by having them engage in sport for commercial benefit.

No child in the world should be forced to work to earn money to help their parents. Also, no child should grow up alone, be abandoned, exploited and persecuted. This is far from being the case throughout the world. In countries with a catastrophic health and economic situation unfortunately children suffer with violence social misery. Poor children also hurting in high-income countries…

In Thailand, some children start this sport to have fun, take taste in competition and become professional boxers. This is often the case for foreign child boxers who are now many to fight in Thailand. The parents of his children «Farangs» (Foreigner) have no financial problem, it’s really the passion of the sport that pushes their child to learn boxing.

But, most of the time, Thai children from underprivileged backgrounds mostly start boxing to try to get by and earn money quickly to help their families. It’s very hard for a child to take school lessons and train in boxing at the same time early in the morning and after school. These boxing children often end their day around 9 o’clock in the evening.

Also, many poor children in the boxing camps are orphans. Stories of abandoned children, rescued from the streets by boxing, are not lacking in Thailand. As for example, this child who had been abandoned by his father on a dock at the fishing port of Pattaya. Master Yodtong had taken him to his boxing camp, the famous Sityodtong where he had taught him the Art of Muay Thai. The child has built a new life that allowed him to make a great career as a professional boxer and to earn a good life thanks to boxing!

Or the beautiful history of the Wor Watthana Gym in Nakhon Ratchassima province. A camp created by two lovers of boxing, Frances Pettitt and Thanit Watthanaya. They built this boxing camp to help children in difficulty, to keep them away from the bad roads that can lead some to delinquency and drugs that are causing havoc in their area. The couple even adopted an orphan, the young fiery Bpaet (Isaan Champion region, 100 fights) who became today a professional fighter who makes a good living with boxing (For more details see the article on the Wor Watthana Gym in Siamfightmag.com).

There are many in Thailand examples of poor children who made a fortune through boxing. The young people who start this sport dream of becoming stars of the rings, great rich and adored champions like Samart Payakaroon, Jaroenthong Kietbanchong, Buakaw Banchamek, Somrak Kamsing or Saenchai Sor Kingstar!

These Muay Thai icons all started boxing very early and did a lot of fighting, Samart (First fight at 7 years old, 150 fights in Muay Thai, 23 fights in Boxing), Jaroenthong (First fight at 12 years old, 151 fights), Buakaw (First fight at 8 years old, 275 fights), Somrak (First fight at 7 years old, 300 fights in Muay Thai, 200 fights in Boxing), Saenchai (First fight at 8 years old, 345 fights).

All the little beginner nakmuays want to win titles and know the exhilaration of fighting in the big stadiums of Bangkok. There, where the best champions of the country compete. But the way is long to reach the top of glory, only the most determined will become champions…

In Thailand, in Muay Thai, the children make matchs of five rounds or three rounds. The duration of the round is 2 minutes instead of 3 minutes for adults. They have no protection except for amateur fights.

The matchs in 3 rounds of 2 minutes are reserved for beginners who have only a few fights (0 to 20 fights). Then, when the child has more than 20 fights or a good level, he makes matchs in 5 rounds of 2 minutes. Also, it is according to the negotiations between each camp of boxing of the child, some wish that their boxer still makes matchs in 3 rounds, others that it passes to the matchs in 5 rounds.

For children, the matchs made in 5 rounds of 2 minutes or 5 rounds of 3 minutes really depend on the level of the young boxers. There can be 3-minute rounds in a big children’s match in the province with a big Dumpan in game (Bet). In the big stadiums of Bangkok, in the stadium of Lumpinee or Radja, the high level youth, 14/15 years old, make matchs in 5 rounds of 3 minutes.

HIGH-LEVEL KID FIGHTING IS AS HARD AS ADULT FIGHTING

The best children boxers of the country receive low purses contrary to the fighters of the adult circuits (Between 3000 and 10 000 bahts for the purses of children champions, the purses of the adult champions are between 50 000 and 150 000 bahts).

In the world of small champions, money is made better thanks to matchs with big Dumpans.

The Dumpan, very common in Thailand, is a bet with an agreement between the two gyms (Team) before the fight. The Teams of each boxer agree on a sum bet, for example 100,000 baht and each gym puts half, 50,000 baht for one and 50,000 baht for the other. The boxer who wins the fight wins 100,000 baht for his Team. His gym put 50,000 Baht on game and won 100,000 Baht, paid his bet and won 50,000 Baht (For more details see the Dumpans article in Siamfightmag.com).

The Dumpan:

https://www.siamfightmag.com/wordpress/en/the-dumpan/

The biggest fights for children are determined by the values of the Dumpan put in game. More, during matchs, there are also large sums of money circulating with bettors which are many attending children’s matchs.

Dumpans can go from 10,000 baht to over 100,000 baht. The record for a Dumpan for a match with children was in 2018 with the wonder boys Yodpet Ek Boomdeksien and Kreng Teeboonlay who were both 9 years old. They fought for a Dumpan of 600,000 baht. A match broadcast on television with the presence of the most important promoter of Thailand, Mr. Peerapong Theeradejpong (Chun Kietpetch).

YODPET EK AGAINST KRENG, KID MATCH WITH A DUMPAN OF 600,000 BAHTS

One of the biggest Dumpans between teenage boxer took place on 9 September 2010 at the Radja stadium with the fight The Lek Wor Sangprapai (14 old) against Julong Ekbansai (17 old). The Dumpan was 3 million baht, a match won by The Lek for the WMC World Champion belt in 105 lbs!

The Isaan region (North-East Region) is the region where children’s matchs are often organized with big Dumpans. It’s a very poor region, the professional circuit of child fights is therefore very important with the provinces of Buriram, Udon Thani, Roi Et, Surin, Chayaphum, Ubon Ratchathani, Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchassima, Khon Kaen, Yasothon, Kalasin, Nong Bua Lamphu. Then there is also the Center and Center-East regions of the country with the provinces of Bang Kraso, Talat Kwan, Chainat, Lopburi, Chachoengsao, Kanchanaburi, Chonburi, Rayong. Finally, the southern regions of Thailand such as, Nakhon Si Tammarat, Thung Song, Trang, Yala, Krabi, Phatthalung are also well supply, there are sometimes children’s matchs in the south with Dumpans of 400,000 baht.

KID FIGHTER POSTER IN THE NORTHEAST REGION

CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTHEAST REGION FROM – 30 KG TO – 60 KG

CHAMPIONS OF THE CENTRAL EAST REGION – 25 KG TO 118 LBS (53 KG)

The most famous stadiums in the Isaan region for the fighting of Muay Dek (Kid Boxing) are in Roi Et and Nakhon Ratchassima.

One of the most coveted belts of the small champions Muay Dek is the belt of champion of Isaan because it’s in this region that exists the largest number of boxers children of all Thailand.

In Bangkok, there are sometimes children’s fights in the Rangsit stadium, not long ago, a match in the 22 kg category was organized in this stadium with a Dumpan of 200,000 baht.

One of the few children’s fights organized at the Radja stadium in Bangkok with a large Dumpan (300,000 baht) took place on January 16, 2020, an event organized by influential promoter Mr. Sommai Sakulmetta (Sor Sommai Promotion). The match was Hanuman Pornchimplee against Monkean Boomdeksien in the 77 lbs (35 kg) category, Hanuman beat Monkean by points.

The fights of children are made almost without weighing small boxers. There can be, sometimes, a very strict weighing, for children’s matchs with an important game. The promoters are intransigent with the weight, the weighing is done on the morning of the fight around 6h-8h as for adults. If the little boxer is not overweight, he must lose his excess weight within the hour. In which case, the match can be cancelled. Also, sometimes, financial arrangements can be negotiated if the fighter does not manage to be of the weight…

WEIGHING FOR AN IMPORTANT MATCH IN THE ROI ET STADIUM

KID FIGHTS MEETING WITHOUT WEIGHING

But most children’s fights in Thailand are done without weighing boxers. The medical examination of the boxer before the fight is also very fast, the authorized doctor of the evening looks only if the child does not have significant injuries on the body.

Fights in the North-East or South of the country are often organized in village parties on improvised rings or in an open-air stadium, a stadium composed of large sheets that acts as a wall to surround a ring raised in the center. Every weekend, there are events with children fighting.

The confrontations between children, except for important championships, are negotiated almost at the last moment. The small nakmuay that have about the same number of fights and similar size will meet. Sometimes, long discussions are necessary to get everyone to agree (For more details see the article « Khon Kaen stadium’s gladiator’s kids » on Siamfightmag).

There are many little children champions in Thailand, one cannot list them all as it would take a whole book. But here are some seeds of champions of the rings that are talking about them right now!

Yodpet Ek Boomdeksien and Yodpet Oh Boomdeksien are two 11-year-old twin brothers. They come from the city of Nong Bua Lamphu in the northeast region, a region which has already provided many great champions like Kapitan Petchyindee (Diesellek Petsiri) the current Lumpinee champion in 154 lbs or the superstar Yodsanklai Fairtex (Lumpinee Champion , WBC, WMC, WPMF world champion).

Yodpet Ek and Yodpet Oh have a very technical and aesthetic fighting style. They total more than 80 fights each and are champions of their provinces, they are among the most famous children’s boxers in the country. Yodpet Ek holds the child combat record with a Dumpan of 600,000 baht for his match against Kreng Teeboonlay, July 15, 2018 in Nonthaburi (Kietpetch Promotion) in the 21 Kg category, a match won by Yodpet Ek.

In June 2019, Yodpet Ek beat the fearsome Jamsak Sitsaenchoeng at Rangsit stadium in Bangkok, he received a big purse of 30,000 baht offered in the ring by the former star of the rings Karuhat Sor Supawan.

The wonder boy of the rings fought again for a very important Dumpan, in October 2019, in Isaan, with a Dumpan of 500,000 bahts, Yodpet Ek still won his fight!

His brother, Yodpet Oh is also classified in the Top 10 of the best children boxers of Isaan. He recently fought against Yotfonluang Sitpetchchalukan in Udon Thani for a match with a Dumpan of 200,000 baht in game, victory in points by Yodpet Oh.

These gifted twins in the rings are part of the exceptional children’s team of the Boomdeksien Gym located in Udon Thani in the Northeast region of Thailand.

This gym belongs to the 24-year-old Chetuphon Commercial College graduate, Mr. Boom Apiprat, who is passionate about boxing, especially children’s boxing. His gym is one of the best in Isaan for child boxers. He has a dozen child boxers between the ages of 8 and 12.

For example, on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, three of the young boxers of the Boomdeksien fought for very important Dumpans in a big boxing event. Yodpet Ek fought with a 500,000 Baht Dumpan, Moonkaen fought with a 30,000 Baht Dumpan, Yodpet Oh fought with a 20,000 Baht Dumpan, and a few days earlier, Sayo fought for the Isaan Champion Belt with a 460,000 Baht Dumpan. All the Boomdeksian fighters have won their fight!

The Boomdeksien also includes as well the twin brothers Khumsaklek and Khumsaknoi who have just been recruited by Mr. Boom Apiprat. The young Khumsaklek’s last fight was with a 200,000 baht Dumpan, he beat a small southern boxer by knockout in the second round. Khumsaklek is one of the Top 10 best children fighters in Isaan!
