THE VOR SAKORNRIT GYM

by Serge TREFEU (2014)

Vor Sakornrit is an exceptional camp which could be registered on the historical heritage of the Thailand because his story deserves a romantic event!

The ground where was built this picturesque camp is filled with memories. Indeed, more than 250 years ago it’s here that trained for the fight the soldiers of the army of Somdet Phra Chao Taksin, the King of Thonburi. The city of Thonburi was the capital of the Siam during the reign of King Taksin!

In 1767, the famous army of King Taksin fought and repel Burmese invader of the kingdom of Siam!

To protect the history of this place, Mr Nawin, the grandfather of the current owner of the Vor Sakornrit, bought the ground here is now about 140 years. Mr Nawin was Krom Luang Chumphon’s right-hand man, son of King Rama V. Rama V is more known under the name of Chulalongkorn, King who reigned from 1868 till 1940!

Admiral Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak (1880-1923) is considered as the father of Thai Royal Navy. In 1922, he became official the commander of Thai Navy!

Besides his naval studies prince Krom Luang Chumphon was also known as a doctor quack with plants, an artistic painter and an excellent boxer. Since his death, he’s worshipped by Thai and considered by many as a divine being. The birthday of his death, on May 19th, is dedicated in the ” Day of the Thai Royal Navy “!

Krom Luang Chumphon was also an instructor of Muay Thai. He trained his soldiers in the fight but one day, having no more enough place, he decided to divide into two his troops and to send them to train on the ground of Mister Nawin. This is the way 102 years ago, Vor Sakornrit became a camp of Muay Thai, even before the Kingdom of Siam became “Thailand”!

Mr Nawin had received by King himself, the nickname of Luangviset Sakornrit which means literally ” The major power of the river “, it’s this name which was given to the camp to honor the memory of Mr Nawin!

At first, the Vor Sakornrit camp was especially intended for the training of the military in Muay Thai. But then, the camp was modified several times to offer structures adequate to the Thai fighters and now to the foreign boxers…

The heiress of this historic camp is Mrs Suchanee Saengsuwan (Sporting director Muay Thaï against the drug) which manages this foundation with her husband, Mr Manothon Saengsuwan (Captain of the Royal Thai Navy and Sporting consultant Muay Thaï against the drug)!
